Ah, Media Day; traditionally one of the most fun days of the Super Bowl’s annual frenzy that precedes the actual football game. Media Day is basically a time for thousands of sportswriters to bombard questions at anyone who will listen to them in hopes that someone will say something stupid and give them something to write about. When people are fishing for controversial answers, some of the questions can get down right goofy... not to mention entertaining to football junkies. On Tuesday, some of the hard hitting issues breeched included the topic of who would play Rex Grossman in the movie version of the Bears, Brian Urlacher’s preference; Spiderman or Super Man, and of course, the burning question of whether Lance Briggs picks up ladies on his My Space page. (To be fair to sportswriters everywhere, many of the stupidest questions were asked by teammates holding microphones on this lighthearted day. Brandon McGowan made more plays on Tuesday than he has all season long).
Though Media Day provided a few smiles and a billion pages of newspaper copy, it doesn’t look like our eager city learned anything that we didn’t already know.
As soon as it is made clear that Tank Johnson is unarmed, the 2006 Bears aren’t exactly a controversial group. The Chicago Bears, like their leader Lovie Smith, are a group that truly seems to put football first and all of the other stuff second. These guys may not have the personality of the ’85 Bears, but the fact that I believe that they will do every thing in their power to win on Sunday goes a long way in my book. It is actually kind of refreshing to be invested in a team like the Bears; a team that seems to bleed football shaped drops of blood.
If I want personality, I’ll find a bunch of stand-up comedians to hang out with. The fact that my football team is focused primarily on football (Rex too) makes me a happy man.

*Also uncovered in today’s hard hitting media session…
Peyton Manning is a hard worker, Rex Grossman has had an up-and-down season, Brian Urlacher is not a stand-up comedian, and Lovie Smith is an African-American… the first black man, in fact, to lead an NFL franchise to the Super Bowl (sorry Tony, Lovie did it first).
By the way… Urlacher prefers the Man of Steel to Web-slinger.
