A woman accosted by two men with a gun while looking at rental apartments was rescued by a couple who jumped out of their car and chased the assailants away, police said.
The victim told police she was walking south in the 4900 block of North Walcott Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 when she passed two white men in their 20s.
About five minutes later the woman felt a hand on her shoulders and one of the robbers demanded her purse, according to police reports.
The woman turned and recognized a man pointing a pistol at her as one of the two men she had passed earlier. The other man stood about 50 feet away.
The woman began screaming for help as the man began pulling on her purse strap.
A couple who was parking their car nearby heard the screaming and ran out to help her, the report says. The two men ran away.
In a similar incident on Saturday within two miles of the earlier attack, a woman returning home from a shopping trip was not as lucky.
The woman was getting out of her car at about 5:45 p.m. in the 5700 block of North Sheridan Road when a man jumped out of a silver car and pointed a small black handgun at her, police said.
The victim handed over a red purse containing $300 and a cell phone. The man jumped back in his car and was driven away by an accomplice.
A man walking his dog near the scene witnessed the robbery and called police.
The victim told police she had seen both men at a nearby Family Dollar Store an hour earlier. She described her attackers as white and in their 20s or 30s.
Police do not yet know whether the two attacks are related.
