Stop comparing the Sun-Times to the Tribune

Jim Oberweis is many things, including a guy who falsified headlines from leading newspapers when he ran a campaign against Judy Barr Topinka. And the Chicago Sun-Times is within its rights to endorse a politician like that.

What I'd like explained to me is why the Chicago Sun-Times feels it owes a nod of any kind to the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune in its endorsement: "The Sun-Times in recent months has made a point of returning to its political roots, speaking with a more progressive editorial voice than our competitor, the conservative Chicago Tribune."

I don't understand this at all. If you actually own your political opinions, you should feel secure in them. This goes hand in glove with one of the most successful, but pointless, Chicago Sun-Times crusades: blasting Sam Zell for planning to sell the naming rights to Wrigley Field.

I read about some 99-year-old man who made his last wish that the name remain unchanged. I've read anonymous postings to sports discussion boards about corporate naming. There was even an editorial about the issue. It is selling newspapers, I suppose.

By all means, sell the newspaper with pointless tirades and editorials about something the newspaper has no business getting involved with. But if this newspaper is going to deliver a "must-read" to the public again, it must stop comparing itself to the Tribune, and stop comparing itself to a previous incarnation. It must become comfortable with what it is now.
