The Chicago Housing Authority is offering its first-ever workshop to help students and their parents apply for $130,000 in college scholarships reserved especially for CHA residents.
The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Charles Hayes Center, 4859 S. Wabash Ave.
"We are going to encourage parents and students to be aggressive in terms of seeking these opportunities," says Director of Youth Opportunities Mark Plummer.
Columbia College offers eight scholarships for any CHA student; Roosevelt University offers two specifically for residents of Wentworth Gardens. Windows of Opportunity, the housing agency's nonprofit, awards the bulk of the money. Last year they awarded more than 60 scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2,500.
Plummer says he doesn't know how many people will attend, but the agency has advertised the workshop on its weekly radio program and through the housing developments' local advisory councils.
The CHA is holding the workshop Saturday because deadlines for the scholarships are looming. Interested students must apply to Roosevelt by April 15, Columbia by May 1 and the nonprofit by May 16. Next year the agency will hold the workshop earlier in the year, Plummer says.
