Ickes buildings to be torn down?

Six buildings in the South Side public housing development Harold Ickes may  be facing demolition.

The Chicago Housing Authority Board of Commissioners are considering asking for permission from the the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to knock the buildings down, according to the meeting agenda.

Of the eight buildings currently standing at Ickes, residents are only living in three of them. According to the 2009 Plan for Transformation document, no plan for Ickes has been set, neither for rehabilitation nor new construction.

The recommendation will be discussed at Operations and Facilities Committee meeting 1:30 p.m. today at the CHA office downtown, 60 E. Van Buren St.
