Winning Ugly

Just where would the Chicago Bears be without the unique skills of Devin Hester?

They just might be sitting at 0-2 on the young season, living in a world where they would have to walk to work through lines of picketers hoisting signs calling for a change at QB. Though the electrifying returns of Devin Hester helped the Bears escape their home opener with a much needed win, even Hester's heroics may not be enough to quiet the critics after another uninspired performance from of Rex Grossman.

The bottom line reality of the situation for the Chicago Bears… they have turned the ball over seven times in two games and have scored one offensive touchdown (a pass to 700-lb, back-up linemen John St. Clair). Take away Grossman's 2-yd TD to St. Clair and we're looking at another QB rating of less than 50 for the Bears erratic signal caller. The Bears aerial attack posted just 30 yards in the second half of Sunday's win (for the love of God, I had to watch a dozen replays to realize that that screen pass was intended for Garrett Wolfe). 30 passing yards may have been enough to grind out a win against the reeling Chiefs, but that level of production will not be enough to get it done against most of the teams in the NFL.

Anyway you cut it up…the Bears are going to need to get more from their offense, especially the QB position. It seems that Lovie Smith and Ron Turner are confident that they can encourage 'Good Rex' to grow into a consistent player, but I'd dare say that they are not willing to lose their jobs waiting for Grossman to blossom.

One thing is for sure… the Chicago Bears head coach has proven that he is a lot more patient than the nation of fans that lives and dies for his team. I don't recall a Monday morning after a Bears win where I've felt so uncertain about my football team… but here we are. I guess all we can do is hope that Lovie, Ron and Rex can figure it out soon and restore some confidence in the Bears shaky offensive unit.

Until then… who can blame Bears fans for being nervous? The team they're pulling for has not even delivered enough to be considered erratic. The truth is… they have just been bad.

-

After a 20-10 Bears win, it can't be all bad. Below lies the proof that some good things did happen in their Bears first win of 2007.

-Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher were all over the field. They combined to make 21 tackles and Urlacher recorded his first sack since before Ditka could grow a mustache (Briggs also recorded a sack as well). When you hold LT under 100 yards, you're doing something right. Ditto for LJ. When two of the top backs going in the game today fail to combine for 100-yards in two weeks of football… you can rest assured that you are watching one of the best defenses in the league once again.

-Losing Dusty Dvoracek is a big blow, but there are a lot of teams that have it worse than the Chicago Bears. Darwin Walker and Tommy Harris give the Bears a beastly one-two punch in the middle; the Bears defensive tackles combined to make nine tackles against the Chiefs. Tommy Harris doesn't seem to be showing much rust… he posted two of the Bears 4 sacks all by himself.

-It was nice to see the Bears lone interception coming from Mike Brown's replacement. Daniel Manning may not be Mike Brown, but he is fast, athletic, and on Sunday he was in the right place at the right time.

-Cedric Benson managed to make a 100-yard performance relatively unexciting. Cedric's a workhorse, a wrecking ball… a vintage Chicago Bear, and yesterday's performance (while not a flashy one) was a step in the right direction for the Bears starting back. Cedric was hitting the hole hard… and to the O-Lines' credit, the holes were open for much of the day.

-8 Bears receivers caught passes on Sunday… and none of them were named Olsen, Hester or Wolfe. The Bears do have a lot of weapons. If they ever figure out how to mesh them into a cohesive, functioning group, a return trip to the Super Bowl is still not a farfetched goal.
