Update, 6:10 p.m:
Officials are now saying that more than 300 runners were transported by ambulance. However, less then 50 of them were taken to hospitals. The remainder were transported to the marathon's medical tent, where they were treated and released.

City officials shut down the Chicago marathon this afternoon after record temperatures sent 250 runners to the hospital.

The Cook County Medical Examiner is reporting that
one runner, a white male in his thirties, died during the race.

It was unclear whether heat-related problems suffered by any of the 250 runners taken to the hospital were deemed life-threatening.

Officials have scheduled a 4:30 p.m. press conference to discuss details.
