17-year-old charged with homicide

Police have charged a 17-year-old with beating a South Austin resident so severely during a robbery attempt that he spent three months in a coma and then died.

The defendant, Justin Walker, was arraigned this morning on homicide and robbery charges.

The victim, a 49-year-old man South Austin resident whose name was not released by police, was found unconscious Jan. 6 in the hallway of an apartment building in the unit block of South Mason Avenue.

The victim died March 9 in West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

Authorities could not say whether Walker had been released on bail.
