A 21-year-old man was in guarded condition at Illinois Masonic Hospital today after falling off his bike and cutting his face in what police believe may have been the result of a gunshot.

According to police, the man was riding his bicycle around 2 a.m. in the 3600 block of W. Fullerton Avenue when he fell and cut his face on a piece of glass after a shot was fired in the area.

Police originally believed the man had been shot in the jaw, Chicago police spokesman Marcel Bright said. Police do not know if the victim was the intended target of the shooting, Bright said.

The incident is under investigation as an aggravated assault, Bright said.
