City health inspectors today closed St. Xavier University's main dining hall, accusing the school of failing to deal with a rodent infestation.

The city first spotted problems March 24 after a person called 311 to complain about falling ill after eating at the school, 3700 W. 103rd. Inspectors found mouse feces, as well as gaps in exit doors, which can allow mice to gain entry, according to a Health Department news release.

Officials ordered the university to eliminate the infestation and seal the doors. When inspectors returned today, they found "numerous mouse feces in multiple areas, including the food preparation area and food storage area," the news release says.

The dining facility, located in the university's Warde Academic Center, will remain closed until the infestation has been eliminated and the facility passes an inspection.

A university spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

St. Xavier enrolls 5,678 students, the vast majority of them female. All but 500 live off campus.
