Crime rate drops in city

The city's crime rate for May dropped 9 percent compared with the same month last year, Chicago police announced Friday. 

Crime was down in every category, with property crime showing the greatest decrease -- 9.4 percent.

Other categories showing significant decreases were:

Aggravated assaults, down 8.9 percent
Robbery, down 8.3 percent
Violent crime, down 6.8 percent

The murder rate dropped by 1.3 percent, with 16 of the 25 police districts reporting fewer murders or no change. Nearly all districts reported decreases in violent and property crimes.
