Mayor Richard M. Daley announced today that he has asked the Chicago Police Board to reopen the search for Police Superintendent.

The board had narrowed the search to three finalists, two from the Chicago Police Department and one from New York.

The three original candidates are still in the running, but Daley said he wanted to be certain to get the best possible person for the job.

The two candidates currently with the Chicago Police Department are Hiram Grau, head of the Bureau of Investigative Services and Charles L. Williams, Deputy Superintendent of the Bureau of Patrol.

Thomas Belfiore is a former New York City police official who now heads the Westchester County, N.Y., public safety department.

Current Chicago Police Superintendent Philip J. Cline recently announced his retirement. It comes in the wake of numerous scandals, including the beating of a female bartender by an off-duty cop that was caught on videotape.
