Firefighters rescued a man trapped in an early morning blaze in Humboldt Park today, and also saved his dog.

Emergency crews were called to a fire in a four-story apartment building in the 1600 block of North Humboldt Avenue around 6:45 a.m.

They spotted a resident on an upper floor, and extended a ladder to rescue him. The man handed his dog to firefighters. They carried the dog to safety, and then returned to help the man from the building, according to fire department spokesman Kevin MacGregor.

The man was taken to St Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center in fair condition, suffering from smoke inhalation.

Other residents of the building were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors, and escaped on their own, MacGregor says.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
