Fourth of July prank or intentional vandalism?

Police are looking for vandals who attempted to light several cars in Rogers Park on fire over the holiday weekend.Shortly after 4am on Saturday, police said, vandals worked their way down the 7300 block of North Honore, stuffing the gas tanks of seven cars with paper and trying to set them afire.

The offenders, for the most part, were unsuccessful. The paper fuses burned out without doing any damage. The one car that did catch on fire destroyed the area around the gas cap and melted his tire. The selection of cars appeared to be random. An officer from the city police bomb and arson unit said the vandals probably selected cars that had unlocked gas-tank covers. The other common characteristic of the chosen cars was they all had large gas tanks.
