The City Council zoning committee approved rezoning of property at Elston Avenue and Logan Boulevard Monday, clearing the way for a new shopping center there.

Developers have yet to sign leases with retails, but the proposal includes parking for 130 cars.

The exact dates for the beginning of construction are not yet known.  Currently, a smattering of residential buildings sit on the site, 2701-45 N. Elston and 2266-72 W. Logan Blvd.

At the same meeting, the committee deferred a motion to rezone a building in the 5300 block of South Lockwood.

5332 S. Lockwood Avenue will not be demolished and replaced by a three-unit condominium.  A petition, presented by a resident of the block, contained fourteen signatures opposing the motion.

The developers of the property had gained the approval of the alderman, but parking questions and a lack of community meetings raised concerns with the Zoning Department, who recommended to the Committee that rezoning be postponed.

The developer’s request for rezoning will be reevaluated at the next Zoning Committee Meeting, which will be held in July.
