The victim of an attempted mugging turned the tables on  his assailants early yesterday morning, fatally stabbing one of them and wounding another, police say.

The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. Tuesday in the 7300 block of Stony Island Avenue. Two teenagers, 16 and 18, were drinking in the street and accosted a 53-year-old male as he walked by, according to police.

The youths followed the man as he walked away.

"After the youths continued accosting the man, he then stabbed them both," says police spokeswoman Officer Joanne Taylor.

Both of the teens were transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, says Taylor.

The 16-year-old, suffering from a stab wound to the chest, was pronounced dead on arrival. The 18-year-old was listed in serious condition with a stab wound to the leg.

Detectives are investigating. No charges have been filed.
