An armed robbery suspect who discovered he was being tailed by detectives today led officers on a chase that ended in the auditorium of a South Side elementary school.
The man, whom police did not identify, was taken into custody without further incident while most of the students at Tilton Elementary School were outside for recess at about 11:30 a.m.
Chicago Police spokesman Officer Marcel Bright said the unarmed suspect ran into the school at 223 Keeler Ave. after realizing he was being followed.
An officer at the scene said children and teachers remained outside the school until the arrest was complete and had no contact with the suspect. But police were taking no chances; both tactical and canine officers responded to the scene, along with at least a half dozen patrol units.
