A three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Clark Street and Balmoral Avenue left a Lexus SUV flipped onto its roof and sent five people to the hospital this afternoon, according to police and fire officials.

Witnesses reported that the Lexus may have run a red light before colliding with a Ford van near the intersection, then striking a second car. The impact flipped the sport utility vehicle onto its roof.

No citations were issued at the scene, however, due to conflicting accounts, police said.

"No one was cited for a traffic violation because different stories of what happened," Police Sgt. Bill Calabrese said at the scene.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said one of the injured was taken to the hospital in critical condition; two others were listed in serious condition. No information on the condition of the other two injured people was available Wednesday.

Chicago Police Officer Tracey Monick, who was at the scene, said the injured included a pedestrian.

Cindy Isham, who lives nearby, was driving her daughter home from school at about 3:45 p.m. when the accident occurred.

"I was just driving home when I saw the Lexus run the red light," Isham said. "Then I heard the crash, so I pulled over."

"The car hit the van first," said her daughter, Georgia, who saw the crash. "Then it hit the green car and flipped," she said.
