South Side fire damages three homes
A three-alarm fire early this morning in the 300 block of South Richmond Street left one home with a partially collapsed roof and two others damaged.
The blaze began in the basement of a two-story row house at 324 S. Richmond and spread up and across the second floor to an attached row house and then across to a third home, according to fire department spokesman Rich Rosado.
No one was injured in the 7:28 a.m. fire, which left a firefighter temporarily unaccounted for, resulting in a mayday call.
"At that time we thought a fireman was missing," said Rosado.
The firefighter thought to be missing had actually jumped onto the roof of the house at 326 S. Richmond St., Rosado said.
In all, 99 firefighter and emergency workers were dispatched to bring the fire under control in a little less than an hour. The fire was elevated to a three-alarm response after the partial collapse of the shared roof.
Two first-floor occupants of 324 S. Richmond were able to escape. The other buildings were unoccupied, Rosado said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
