Teen charged in U of C slaying

Police charged a teenage boy with the murder of a University of Chicago graduate student this morning.

Eric Walker, 16, of the 7700 block of South Marshfield Ave. told detectives he was involved in the killing of  Amadou Cisse, a police spokesman said.

Cisse was shot in the chest in the early morning of Nov. 19, in front of his off-campus apartment at 61st Street and Ellis Avenue.

Walker is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder. He also faces robbery charges, police said.

Police said Walker was caught with help from witnesses and video surveillance cameras which captured images of the get-away car.

Cisse was earning his doctorate in chemistry and was scheduled to graduate next month. The university will award him the degree posthumously.

There will be a memorial for Cisse Friday at 3 p.m. at the Bond Chapel at 1050 E. 59th Street at the U of C Campus.

The university also set up a memorial fund for Cisse. Donations may be sent to the Amadou Cisse Family Support Fund, c/o University of Chicago Bursar, 5801 S. Ellis Ave., Chicago, IL 60637.

Correction: This article has been updated to reflect that authorities said Walker was involved in the crime, but was not the gunman. An earlier version of the article was incorrect on that point.
