A toddler's death was ruled a homicide Tuesday after an autopsy indicated he was beaten to death.

The boy, Lonnie Black, of the 6400 block of South King Drive, was brought to Chicago Comer Children's Hospital Monday around 4:30 p.m. by a caregiver who told officials the child lost consciousness after choking on some food, Chicago Police spokesman Marcel Bright said.

An autopsy performed Tuesday showed the boy, who would have turned 2 next week, died from blunt-force trauma to the head, Bright said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is  investigating . Bright said the agency had no prior contact with the family.
