Some Chicago-area grocery chains rated well in an advocacy group's report on sustainable seafood marketing, while Trader Joe's received among the worst marks.

The report, issued yesterday by environmental group Greenpeace, ranked retailers on whether they sell species in danger of overfishing, whether they have a policy supporting sustainable fisheries, and whether fish are clearly labeled as sustainable or not. 

Whole Foods, with several stores in the Chicago area, ranked third. Safeway, the parent company of Dominick's, ranked fifth.

Supervalu, which operates Jewel-Osco stores, ranked 13th. And Trader Joe's came in at number 17.

Whole Foods and Trader Joe's representatives could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Trader Joe's was dinged for selling a number of unsustainable fish species. Whole Foods was, too, bot got good marks for developing a seafood sustainability policy and training staff to answer questions about how fish are caught, Greenpeace says.
