Two injured in South Side kitchen fire

Two people were hospitalized Monday after a South Side kitchen fire, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the single-story wood frame house at 5819 S. Bishop Street at 12:30 p.m., fire department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez said.

It took firefighters half an hour to put out the fire, which appeared to have started in the kitchen, Rodriguez said.

A woman, believed to be in her 60s, was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital in critical condition after firefighters performed CPR at the scene. She was listed in stable condition later Monday, after being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

A man, whose age was unknown, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was treated for burns to his face and upper body. He was also listed in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
