A Lincoln Park grocery store failed a city health inspection for the second time in three days today due to rodent infestation.
Whole Foods Market, 1000 W. North Ave., will remain closed until further notice, the Chicago Department of Pubic Health announced.
The store was shut down Wednesday afternoon by the city
when an inspection turned up mouse feces and a dead mouse. Whole Foods
requested another inspection this morning with an intent to
re-open in the afternoon, officials say.
However, the new inspection turned up another dead mouse under a display cooler and mouse droppings behind and around food-service equipment, health inspectors say.
Whole Foods officials did not indicate when the store would be ready for another inspection.
"After reassessing our situation, it was determined that additional areas within the store need to be further worked on in order to meet the city's standards," Whole Foods spokesperson Kate Klotz says. "This includes moving permanent fixtures. Due to the time and effort it takes to move these fixtures, we were unable to open today."
Whole Foods, based in Austin, Texas, faces an expected $500 fine
and an administrative hearing on Aug. 21, the city says.
The store's problems began when an inspection June 27 turned up "a limited amount of mouse feces," says Tim Hadac, spokesman for the health department. When Wednesday's inspection showed more feces and a dead mouse, the violation was downgraded from serious to critical, prompting the closing.
Klotz says consumers can e-mail Whole Foods at customer.comments@wholefoods.com, with comments or questions.
City officials say the Whole Foods closing marks the 109th time this year that the health department has shut down a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code. Suspected violations can be reported by citizens by dialing 311.

It is pathetic to see the neon green sign saying license suspended on the doors of the Whole Foods Market in Lincoln Park after they failed the Friday re-inspection! Employees are standing there with handouts to give to customers. What can they possibly be saying? "We're sorry we couldn't keep the store clean enough to prevent a rodent infestation where we sell food for your consumption, but here take this flyer!"
