It might have taken an unlikely swing from 4-for-40 pinch hitter
Daryle Ward, but somehow the Cubs managed to end a drought in
Dolphin Stadium nearly three years old with a dramatic
come-from-behind win 6-5 last night.
I don't think that fishy stank has really ever left Cubs fans
nostrils since 2003, but winning the season series against Florida
this weekend paired with a World Series birth would certainly clear
it out of the air.
The Florida Marlins are pretty much the anti-Cubs. League's
lowest payroll and still a great measure of success, along with
several players like Hanley Ramirez, Jeremy Hermida and Jorge
Cantu--especially Jorge Cantu--that I would piss myself if I ever
saw wearing an NL Central uniform. They're chock full of
Cub-killers and frankly I can't wait for the Cubs to get out of
there. Few wins have been as satisfying as last night's, that's for
sure.
It sure was a pleasure seeing Chad Gaudin and Kerry Wood get
things done after Carlos Zambrano struggled with his control yet
again. Big Z will get back on pace, but when you can do him a favor
and give him the no-decision after he's pitched poorly, you've got
to feel good. The bullpen was pretty key to this win.
After the postponement of last Tuesday's game, Sean Marshall
will make his third start of the season tomorrow. It'd be nice to
see Sean do some great work. With the way the bullpen has pitched
lately and Carlos Marmol's excessive rest (for once), all the Cubs
need is solid baseball from Sean to get the job done. That's pretty
much how it is with the Marlins: don't let their bats beat up your
starters and you should survive. The run support should be much
more ample this series now that Marlin starter Josh Johnson is out
of the way.
