Newsday is becoming paralyzed by fear, reporters putting sources on hold whenever someone runs in screaming about the latest jobs cuts, if the images from John Koblin's New York Observer article can be believed. "Everyone is totally absorbed in it," a reporter is quoted as saying.
Newsday has watched as other newspapers in the Tribune Co. have cut jobs this month. Sam Zell told the company's employees February 13th that there would be cuts at every newspaper. Newsday has yet to make any announcements about job cuts.
"You'll hear the rumor that it's seven positions, then 40, then 10, then you hear the newsroom will be spared," William Murphy, a reporter on the Long Island desk is quoted as saying. "There's all these e-mails back and forth and no one knows what's happening."
Although the article says there are no job cuts left that won't cut bone. The article seems to indicate that there are a lot of people with too much time on their hands.
