A double-truck editorial states the
Chicago Sun-Times opinion on the sale of Wrigley Field by the
Chicago Cubs to the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. Surprise:
the newspaper opposes the sale.
This was not the poetic opposition
of Greg Hintz in Crain's Chicago Business, but a piece without a
lot of passion. "No one has articulated how Wrigley could spin off
more cash than it already does," the editorial says, "what state
agency run by political appointees would tell Wrigleyville that it
plans to schedule more rock concerts and night
games?"
"When (Sam) Zell took over the
Tribune Co., he did it largely with other people's money… The
Trib's employees were Sam's stooges then. In the Wrigley deal, we
would be his stooges," it says.
