Where have I seen this before?

The Trib unveiled a redesigned chicagotribune.com last night.

On one hand, there's a lot to like -- or at least like better than other news sites. Too often, editors are unable to say 'no' to stuff on the web. More articles, more ads, more pictures... and all of the sudden the site looks like a flea market.

The Trib's new site is less of a visual riot than many others.

It's got some white space between design elements. And they've avoided the heavyhanded colors that make a lot of sites look like a college web-design project, circa 1995.

On the other hand, the video player should be a lot higher, and the tabs for sports, news, etc, don't do a lot for me. And the site still does a horrible job of separating staff and wire service copy, as well as separating local news from national and foreign.

There's something slightly askew about the design, too -- it looks like it doesn't have the sense of proportion that a good grid would provide.

But here's the worst part: Apparently the Trib isn't worth enough to justify its own design. The layout is cribbed from what looks like a companywide template.

Now that's depressing.
