Ravings

Stalked by Comcast

I'm always amazed at the degree to which old-school monopolies -- cable companies, phone companies, power companies -- continue acting like monopolies even after competitors sprout up and start eating their lunch.

Case in point: About four weeks ago I called Comcast to see about setting up Internet service at our new office. My ever-cheerful sales rep said they'd send someone out to do a site survey and make sure our building was cable-ready.

I never heard back from them. A week later I called again and was told that they were still working on it, but that we probably wouldn't be able to get service.

I gave up and went with another DSL provider, Covad.

The folks from Covad came out, did a survey, got the phone company to sort out the line, and scheduled us for installation tomorrow.

Now, three weeks later, Comcast won't stop calling to schedule us for installation. I've heard from three separate reps there, on nearly 10 occasions.

So, if you're Comcast, here's the moral of the story: Fire some of your salespeople and use the money to invest in providing competitive service to potential customers. There's other companies out there who now provide the same services you do, and people will dump you for them in a heartbeat if they get the chance.
