Amundsen season ends with loss

The Lake View High School football team defeated the Amundsen Vikings 29-26 this afternoon in a season-ending offensive battle that featured two dramatic touchdown-scoring kick returns.

The Vikings scored first, with a 20-yard touchdown pass. Amundsen's attempt at a two-point conversion failed.

The Wildcats quickly returned fire, scoring on an off-tackle run from two yards out. Lake View's extra-point attempt went wide, leaving the game tied at 6.

Amundsen went ahead moments later on a blazing 90-yard kickoff return.

Lakeview pushed back with a series of gritty running plays and crisp passing. The Wildcats scored with 17 seconds remaining in the half on a play action fake.

The first half ended with another full-field kick return for the Vikings. Their conversion attempt came up short with an incomplete pass, and they ended the half ahead 20-14.

In the second half, the Vikings stalled a Lake View drive, but then turned the ball over on their 18. The Wildcats converted that error into a touchdown, and Amundsen returned the favor in short order.

Lake View scored the final TD of the game with 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Vikings mounted a last-second drive, throwing short passes toward the sidelines. But time ran out as they neared midfield.
