DePaul Knocks off Wake Forest

DePaul remains undefeated at home this season.  They improved to 4-4 after a 78-63 victory over Wake Forest Monday night at the Allstate Arena.

Despite getting outscored in the second half, DePaul was so dominant in the first that victory was virtually insured after only 20 minutes of play.

The story in the first half was the stellar play of sophomore forward Wilson Chandler.  DePaul thrives when he creates scoring opportunities.  Chandler scored 8 straight DePaul points and 10 of their first 12.  In only the first ten minutes of play, Chandler had four dunks and finished the first half with 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting.

Equally as impressive in the first half was senior guard Sammy Mejia.  Mejia tallied 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting (2 of 3 from 3 point land).  His 4 first half assists and 6 rebounds complimented that scoring nicely and DePaul really never looked back on a 46-27 first half lead.

Key to their first half success was establishing a tough inside presence early on, allowing them to cruise to a 19 point lead.

20 of the Demons first 22 points came from within the paint.  This presence was lacking in early defeats at Bradley and Northwestern but has been on full display against Kentucky, Kansas and Wake Forest.

The highlight of the second half for DePaul was the continued encouraging play of freshman guard Will Walker.  Walker showcased excellent passing when he hit Jabari Currie with an alley oop pass with 5 minutes left in the game.  Mejia looked gassed with about eight minutes left in the game but Walker made up for that with tough defense.

Wake Forest center Kyle Visser put up 20 points in the loss.

DePaul travels to Rhode Island this Saturday and returns home Wednesday for a matchup with UC Irvine.
