An estimated 500 athletes competed Saturday in the third annual South Shore Triathlon, an event aimed at first-timers and children.
The event started as a collaboration between Alderman Leslie Hairston, a long-time triathlete, and her former coach, Bernard Lyles. The two organized an after-school program and a summer camp at Bally's to promote the sport.
After driving to events for years she decided: "I have the city's the third largest park, why not have my own?"
The South Shore features abbreviated running, swimming and cycling stages. Cycling distances at Saturday's event ranged from 4 to 10 kilometers. By comparison, the cycling stage of the Chicago Triathlon to be held later this month ranges between 22K and 40K."I want them to not be afraid to try anything in life," says Love.
The Pill Hill resident praised Tri-Masters,
the organization that coordinates the event and runs a training
program to help racers prepare.
Health and safety are priorities for the program.
"[Tri-Masters doesn't] just teach them about riding and that kind of thing, it's also about wearing the proper equipment, getting the proper rest and the proper diet," says Love.
