After losing two in a row, the Fire enter the postseason with some momentum. They finished out the 2006 regular season with a 3-2 victory on the road against 2006 Supporters' Shield winner, D.C. United on Sunday.
Chicago did most of their scoring midway thru the first half, with two goals coming within just minutes of each other.
Defender Gonzalo Segares tallied his first goal of the season off of the cross from midfielder Justin Mapp in the 21st. Shortly after, forward Nate Jacqua added his eighth goal of the season in the 24th to give the Fire a 2-0 lead.
MVP candidate, Christian Gomez accounted for all of D.C.'s goals in this game. He scored in the 34th and 82nd.
But the real story in the second half was once again Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens. Usual starter Zach Thornton has been healthy for a few weeks now but Pickens has held onto the starting job ever since his stellar play (subbing for the injured Thornton) during the U.S. Open Cup.
Pickens had 8 saves on Sunday. Seven of those came during the second half.
Fire forward Andy Herron added what would ultimately become the game winner in the 74th and Chicago took home the victory 3-2.
Finishing the season with 47 points, the Men in Red enter the MLS playoffs as the number 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. A 1-0 New England victory over the last place Columbus Crew on Saturday solidified that.
The Fire will begin postseason play in Bridgeview this Sunday at Toyota Park with an early noon start time against the New England Revolution.
