Yesterday evening, Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, along with two of the show's producers, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, had all been illegally arrested and detained by the Minneapolis Police. They were released late last night, and are facing felony obstruction and rioting charges. See the full DN! press release. Video of Goodman's arrest here.
This came after the house where members of the I-Witness Video collective set up shop and were working was raided by police on Saturday.
These raids send us a disturbing reminder that media that breaks the rules, that doesn't buy into the scripted spectacle, and tries to report the stories that many don't want to hear, is subject to repression. These raids, though not unprecedented, represent a serious threat to the ability of the independent media to operate freely and tell the stories that get told nowhere else.
Check out MinnPost.com and Twin Cities Indymedia to stay updated to on-the-ground events in Minneapolis and St.Paul. And please stay alert to the ongoing intimidation and repression of independent media both in the Twin Cities and here at home.
