Workshops, orientations, and targetted recruiting

We just finished looking at data about where our neighborhood reporters are in the city. I'm proud to say that we've got 65 reporters fairly well spread out across Chicago.

That's not to say that there aren't holes in our coverage. The Southwest, Northwest, and far South sides of Chicago are next up on our list. As far as density is concerned, we have more people on the far North side than anywhere else, which is not too surprising considering the success of our monthly workshops at the office in Andersonville.

I'm using an assumption that community building is crucial to the long-term health of an organization (or for that matter a movement). If that's our goal, then consistently hosting events in an area, putting resources into the neighborhood (such as workshops, coverage resources) will help us create lasting relationships with reporters, news makers and readers there.

So, for now, we're not going to be hosting many events at the office. Our next orientation is going to be in West Town, and our August workshop will (hopefully) be in Archer Heights. You can always see that calendar at Learning.ChiTownDailyNews.org

Long term we're thinking about opening an office on the South or West side, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
