We’re Chicago’s leading online local news source. The Daily News is a three-year-old nonprofit online newspaper covering Chicago. We serve 25,000 readers a month, and our audience has doubled in the past year.
The Daily News is guided by a seven-person board of directors that includes two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, as well as business and nonprofit leaders. Our news coverage is led by three editors who have a combined 60 years of experience at major metropolitan newspapers.
We believe well-informed citizens are the foundation of a vibrant democracy.
Over the past five years, Chicago newspapers have eliminated hundreds of journalism jobs. As a consequence of the turmoil sweeping the news industry, the local issues that most impact people’s daily lives receive less and less attention, and in many cases go completely uncovered.
The Daily News is currently the only news organization providing regular beat coverage of the Chicago Housing Authority, the Chicago Board of Education and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, among other topics.
We publish articles written by our team of seasoned beat reporters covering citywide topics like education, the environment, public housing and health. Their work is supported by trained volunteer neighborhood reporters. We currently work with 70 volunteers, and are building a network that will include 4-6 community residents covering each of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods.
Like NPR and public television, the Daily News relies on a combination of grants, individual contributions, and corporate underwriting. Major support is provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, one of the country’s leading journalism funders.
