Not only is Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Kyle Orton’s favorite movie “The Big Lebowski”, but his nickname amongst teammates and friends is actually “The Dude”. To further the status of this nomenclature, I have decided to point out five similarities in Kyle Orton and the laid back protagonist of the 1998 Coen brother’s classic film.
1) In the movie “The Big Lebowski” The Dude is attacked by a ferret (referred to as a marmot) thrown at him by nihilists – Kyle Orton apparently had a similar creature thrown at him which has now clamped on to his jaw and is passing for a beard.
2) The Dude’s closest protector is Walter Sobchack, a giant man with a violent temper who loves to pick fights – Kyle Orton has center Olin Kruetz protecting him, a guy who has broken the jaws of two teammates during his career.
3) A variation of the “F word” is dropped 281 times during “The Big Lebowski”, the same average number of “F words” blurted out by Chicago Bears defenders on the sidelines each and every Sunday.
4) In the movie, you never actually see The Dude bowl a frame – Come to think of it, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Kyle Orton throw a TD pass either.
5) The Dude’s nemesis in the film, “The Jesus”, is a sex offender often clad in skin tight purple clothing – Kyle Orton has the Minnesota Vikings.
