Here comes Milton Bradley. You know that left-handed outfielder the Cubs have needed all off season? This is it folks. 3 years, 30 million. He's the guy they wanted and he's the guy they got.

Bradley comes off an all-star career year with Texas where he batted .321 as the Rangers DH. In his career he's been a .280 hitter, which is pretty much what this Cubs team is full of right now. The difference is he can hit from both sides of the plate and accordingly, he will hit in the lineup wherever he can break up the right-handed bats.

While there' s no question Bradley is an upgrade in right field that will allow Fukudome and Reed Johnson to battle for center field playing time, he has far from an immaculate record. In making their decision, the Cubs had to weigh in some seriously injury concerns as Bradley has had many of them as well as some temperamental issues. I guess just keep him away from Carlos Zambrano.

Going from The Ballpark at Arlington as a DH to right field at the Friendly Confines is also no picnic. The chance of Bradley repeating his all-star season last year are unlikely. He'll be playing offense and defense every day playing mostly day games at Wrigley. While Wrigley could be called a hitter's park, it's nothing like Arlington for hitters, so the production will drop there alone.

As far as his temperamental problems (yelling at fans, wanting to charge after umps), there was not enough risk here to make the Cubs pass on him. While the right field bleacher bums will give him hell if he plays poorly, especially because they're all irritable since they no longer can practice Fukudome worship, I can't imagine he would try climbing up the ivy and over the basket to take on any drunks.

The only real concern is injuries. He's had more or less a year off from playing the outfield and he will need to condition for it, the trickiness of right field at Wrigley aside. Also, with left fielder Alfonso Soriano prone to hitting the DL once a year and Bradley a very likely replacement in left, to not have Bradley due to his own injuries would make things tough in that outfield in terms of players who can also contribute their bats.

Keep on complaining about DeRosa, Cubs fans, but stop the booing here. This is an improvement. Unless Bradley hits the season-ending DL, the worst he's going to do is have an average year. You're guaranteed a guy who will be hitting around .280 and that's very reasonable for 10 mil a year, especially when he fills a switch-hitting need.
