When I'm not writing media entries, I'm writing about hockey or a science fiction novel featuring aliens, ray-guns and hidden cities.
Naw... I'm just making that up.
If Lou Grant were a real person and alive today, he'd be in his late 80's. People wonder if I'm Geoff Dougherty. I'm not. But, Geoff chose my screen name.
If I had my choice I'd have chosen Michael Landon, a name I wrote under for the Chicago Media Examiner. Michael Landon is also an assumed name.
In twenty years of newspaper ops I've worked for just about every newspaper that does business in the city and worked with most of the newspapers that surround the city too.
The assumed names were important to protect my employment. That all came to an end in August last year when I was laid off by the Chicago Tribune. I'm a three-time loser, having been laid off or had my contract terminated by the Chicago Tribune three times.
I've never had a better year than since I left the Tribune.
